Prevention is Better Than Cure

The newly discovered Coronavirus has infected thousands of people across the globe. Here are some simple precautions you can take to P-R-O-T-E-C-T your family from the virus.

By now, you will have heard of the Coronavirus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes it as a new strain of virus belonging to the same family, or types of viruses, that cause illness ranging from the common cold through to the more extreme Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

But don’t panic. Containing the spread of the virus is critical, so stay alert and adopt these preventive measures at home immediately.

1) P

Prevention is critical to containing a virus, as viruses are difficult to cure. When it comes to the home, ensuring you have an optimal germ-blaster at your disposal is a priority.

2) R

Remove germs from all commonly touched surfaces in your home. We suggest you use a suitable disinfectant, like a bleach-based (sodium hypochlorite) product such as Domex Floor Cleaner, which is active against respiratory viruses, as recommended by the International Scientific Forum on Home & Hygiene. These surfaces include computer keyboards, TV remotes, telephones, door handles, tap handles, toilet seats and flush handles.

3) O

Observe your family for the following symptoms released by the US Centre for Disease Control, which include a runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, fever or a general feeling of being unwell. Do not hesitate to seek medical advice if they show any of these symptoms.

4) T

Take hand sanitiser with you when you’re out, preferably one with high alcohol content (min 69%). Check for this in the ingredient list. Ensure your family members cover their hands with it and rub thoroughly after they have come into contact with high-use areas such as door handles, public toilets or menus in restaurants.

5) E

Ensure your family washes their hands regularly with soap; make it a priority. Before and after using the toilet, before and after meals, and when you come in from outside. Washing hands for up to a minute is highly effective.  If anyone in the family does become ill, avoid sharing towels, facecloths, toothbrushes and eating utensils. Also, wash clothes separately at a higher temperature (at least 60⁰C) to avoid the spread of viruses in the home. Hot water kills germs effectively.

6) C

Contain anything in your home that comes into contact with human waste; tissues go straight into lined bins, toilet waste is removed from surfaces and disinfected with a disinfectant toilet cleaner like Domex. After sneezing, germs can travel up to 3m, spreading unwanted infections, so cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and wash your hands straightaway.

7) T

Tell everyone the steps they can take to protect your home and encourage them to do the same. After all, preventing the spread of a virus is a group effort.

For continually updated information on the Coronavirus, we recommend getting information directly from the WHO site, which is working globally to manage and contain the spread of this viral infection.

Why the Shame? Pick up the Brush!

Toilet cleanliness is one of the most important elements of a safe and clean home, yet it is often neglected. Domex is committed to helping to improve sanitation and battle the effects of poor toilet hygiene.

The importance of toilet cleanliness

We know why cleanliness is important: hygiene is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk and spread of disease. Toilet hygiene is crucial for good health and dignity in our daily lives. A clean toilet is not a luxury; it is a basic sanitary need.

Despite this, one estimate suggests that 72% of Indians do not have access to improved sanitation facilities.[1] Poor toilet hygiene brings a long list of potential health risks. Relieving oneself in unsanitary conditions can lead to infections and diseases, especially diarrhoea. In extreme but not uncommon cases, diarrhoea diseases can be fatal. In fact, diarrhoea is the third leading cause of childhood mortality in India.[2]

Recognising the importance of clean toilets starts in our own homes. Having access to a toilet is a huge advantage to personal hygiene, which we need to use and appreciate by keeping it as clean as possible. It’s time that everyone takes ownership of the task of keeping their own toilet clean. The cultural stigma that many of us still attach to cleaning toilets is only making our own daily lives unpleasant and unsanitary. It’s time to normalise toilet cleaning as what it really is: just a household chore like any other.

Benefits of clean toilets are impossible to overestimate: if everyone takes personal responsibility to ensure that their toilets are clean, life will be more pleasant and hygienic for everyone.

Our 'Why the shame? Pick up the brush!' campaign for toilet cleanliness

Domex believes that poor sanitation is an evil worth fighting and is working with people across different walks of life to reduce the stigma associated with cleaning toilets... Across the globe cleaning toilets is considered like any other chore. Even when we, Indians, go abroad for work or a vacation we do all household chores ourselves including cleaning toilets. Unfortunately, this sense of normalcy about cleaning the toilet and treating it like any other chore doesn’t exist in India.[3]

Domex is committed, to defeating this stigma and helping everyone achieve a hygienic, practical approach to toilet hygiene.
